The group has been based by guitarist Rihardom Kruspe, the emigrant from GDR, after its homecoming in the city of Schwerin. All members of group from the former German Democratic Republic, in particular East Berlin and Schwerin. Kruspe is the basic composer of group. In 1994 together with Tillem Lindemannom (vocal), Oliverom Ridelem (bass guitar) and Kristofom Schneider (shock) they have won competition in Berlin, having acquired the record right at professional studio. One year later the second guitarist Paul Landers, and then and keyboard player Christian Lorentz has joined group.
The group name has been made of words Ramm and Stein (stone), and simultaneously sends to the name of the city of Ramshtajn-Mizenbah where on military base of the NATO during an air show in 1988 there was a failure to set of victims. About this failure tells with the same name to a city (but not to group) a song «Rammstein».
In 1995 the group has let out a debut album «Herzeleid» at studio «Motor Music». Already the first disk «Rammstein» has won wide popularity, becoming "gold".
Rammstein leader Nine Inch Nails has noticed Trent Reznor who has advised their two songs in a soundtrack to David Lynch's thriller «Highway in anywhere». It has brought to group additional popularity. In 1995 in support of an album, Rammstein have made round across Europe on a warming up at Clawfinger. At concerts Rammstein showed bright pyrotechnic shows. In 1996 Rammstein for the first time have acted on TV channel MTV.
